JYU in the university ranking for sustainable development

The QS Sustainability rankings assess how universities are responding to challenges related to the environment, society, and governance. The focus is especially on social impacts, that is, on the effectiveness of research and the graduates’ skills and knowledge regarding sustainable development, for example, rather than on the environmental aspects of university campuses.
The assessment looks at a university’s environmental and social impacts. In the different indicators, JYU’s global ranking was best in Impact of Education, reaching the position 134. Within the various sub-indicators of Environmental Impact, JYU’s best category was Sustainable Institutions, with the ranking of 446.
The QS Sustainability ranking assesses universities’ social impact in five indicators: employment and opportunities, equality, quality of life, impact of education, and knowledge exchange. Environmental impacts are assessed for three indicators: sustainable education, sustainable institutions, and sustainable research.
To be included in this ranking, a university must be committed to fighting climate change, have a sufficient volume of publications dealing with the themes of UN sustainable development, and the university must also have a QS University ranking. The ranking is based on numerical and publication data, alumni and employer survey data as well as national statistics describing the university.
The highest-ranking universities in this assessment were the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Toronto.
