JYU shifts to electronic degree certificates

As a result of this reform, degree certificates will be given in an electronic format. The reform increases the reliability of degree certificates, speeds up the certification process, and makes the certificate easier to save. The electronic format also enhances contemporary job seeking practices, since it is an official document and easy to attach to job applications, for example. The authenticity of the certificate is easy to confirm from the verification service of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
An electronic degree certificate is an official original certificate with the Dean’s or Vice Dean’s electronic signature. By their layout, electronic certificates are similar to current ones.
“Graduating students may also ask for a printed copy of the certificate from the University or print a copy by themselves if they want to, for example, put it into frames as a memento,” says Project Manager Jutta Aalto.
An electronic degree certificate is much harder to counterfeit than a paper version. An electronic degree certificate is a document approved at EU level and its signature meets the highest standards of the European Commission. For certificates needed outside the EU, the University can submit officially verified paper copies in addition to the electronic degree certificate, where necessary.
