Marja Makarow elected as a new University Board member from outside the JYU community
PhD Marja Makarow is currently the president of Academia Europaea (AE) and a board member of the European Innovation Council (EIC). Previously Marja Makarow has served as, for example, a vice rector and a professor of applied biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Helsinki, a chief executive of the European Science Foundation (ESF), a vice-president for research at the Academy of Finland, a board member of European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT), and the director of Biocenter Finland. She has served on the university boards of several universities and is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.
“The University Collegium sought for more extensive knowledge of the university world and international operating environments to the University Board,” says Chair of the University Collegium Kaisa Miettinen. “We are very happy that we are able to supplement the University Board of the University of Jyväskylä with Marja Makarow’s versatile competence and experience.”
In 2021, the University Collegium elected Tapio Huttula, Antti Koivula and Hanna Maula as University Board members from outside the university for the term of office 1 January 2022–31 December 2023. Tapio Huttula has resigned from the University Board from 1 January 2023.
The University Collegium interviewed Antti Koivula and Hanna Maula on 14 February 2023 and elected them to continue as University Board members for the term of office 1 January 2024–31 December 2025. The Board elects its chair and vice chair from the board members.
