New e-book apps replace Adobe Digital Editions within Ebook Central and VLEBooks e-book platforms

The change will come into effect on 2 September 2026 with Ebook Central and during September with VLEBooks. New applications are only used to download entire e-books for offline use. There will be no changes to the browser use of e-books on these platforms.

As of 2 September 2026, the ADE program will be discontinued as a reading program on the Ebook Central and VLEBooks e-book platforms. The ADE program has already been removed from use earlier this and last year from other major e-book platforms used by the library (Ellibs and EBSCO).

In both Ebook Central and VLEBooks e-book platforms the ability to read e-books directly in the browser without having to install a separate program will be retained. The download of individual e-book chapters to your device will also remain unchanged.

This change only applies to downloading and offline reading of an entire e-book. With the apps, e-books can be downloaded to your device for a fixed period of time and read without a network connection.

Ebook Central: Ebook Central Reader App

The Ebook Central Reader App is available for mobile devices and computers (Windows, macOS, iOS and Android).

You can download the Ebook Central Reader App from the link in the app store/Ebook Central. For computers managed by the university, the application can be downloaded from the Software Center.

Downloading ebooks from Ebook Central and registering your device requires you to sign in to your account on Ebook Central (click sign-in at the top right corner). A 7-digit code is required for registration. You can get it when you download an e-book or under Profile --> EBC app devices.

Please note: If you have e-books downloaded into Adobe Digital Editions, they will automatically migrate to the new app.

The VLeBooks App needs an access code to work. You can find the code on VLeBooks, under your own account (My account --> VLeBooks App), where you can click "Generate New Access Code" if necessary.
