It was also possible to have an on-site adventure in the world of science. The evening included, for example, small-group tours in the Accelerator Laboratory and the Nanoscience Center and biology programme for pupils and other audience. Diving research in Mattilanniemi lakeside interested many who also came to see the City of Light artworks.

“It is delightful that the versatile Researchers’ Night offering attracted so many visitors,” says Janne Pakarinen, who was responsible for the physics programme. “Many sessions for schools were booked full early before the event. This shows that science and research interest people of many ages.”

More than thirty sessions from the University of Jyväskylä ensured that science themes were presented from many perspectives. The morning programme was directed specifically to kindergarten children, pupils and adolescents. The evening programme was for the whole family.

Evening programme in the Martti Ahtisaari Hall offered, among others, good news about ageing. The programme from the main stage was also available as a live stream.

For example, tardigrades and other biology themes as well as the zombie escape room received plenty of good feedback from the audience. The bangs, puffs and colour lights of the Department of Chemistry also attracted the public.

In Finland, the European Researchers’ Night programme was organised by the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Turku, the University of Tampere, the Helsinki Institute of Physics HIP and Yrkeshögskolan Arcada.
