Staff Week: Responsible Research 12-16 February 2024

FORTHEM Staff Week is designed for the experts who have duties related to responsible research or research assessment at FORTHEM universities. The week consists of a 5-day on-site programme from February 12 to February 16, 2024 hosted by University of Jyväskylä.

We aim at receiving at least 20 participants and we wish that all FORTHEM universities are represented. We hope that alliance universities would send up to four staff members to the staff week. A wide variety of duties within the organizations will enhance discussions, therefore experts from university libraries, HR, research management and administration etc. as well as researchers are most welcome to participate the week.

How to get to Jyväskylä?

By train from Helsinki Airport (recommended!)

If you travel by train, take the Ring Rail Line train from Helsinki Airport to Tikkurila and change trains there. The journey from the airport to Tikkurila railway station takes about 8 minutes. Trains leave every 10 minutes. There are direct train connections from Tikkurila to Jyväskylä, but in some cases you will have to change trains at Tampere.

If you wish to go the Helsinki city centre first and catch the train from there, take the I or P train or the local bus number 600 to the Helsinki Central Railway Station and continue your journey from there. It will take about 50 minutes to get to the Helsinki Central Railway Station.

The journey to Jyväskylä takes 3-4 hours depending on the train. Please check the train connections and purchase tickets on the VR (Finnish Railways) website. We highly recommend booking tickets in advance, since they get more expensive closer to the travel date.

By bus from Helsinki Airport

The bus trip to Jyväskylä will take about 3.5 hours. There are several buses leaving from Helsinki city centre (Kamppi) to Jyväskylä. Please check the bus connections at www.matkahuolto.com. For Onnibus, tickets can be purchased only online. For other buses, tickets can be purchased online and also from the driver. The prices are usually cheaper when purchased online and in advance.

Flights to Jyväskylä

Flying from Helsinki Airport to Jyväskylä takes approximately 50 minutes. There is no public transportation from Jyväskylä Airport to the city centre (23 kilometers from Jyväskylä) but there are usually taxis in front of the airport during the scheduled arrival times. If you wish to book a taxi in advance (recommended), please call +358 100 6900 (advance booking payment € 9) or download the JYTAKSI APP. You can also use the free telephone inside the terminal building to call for a taxi. If you do not book the taxi in advance, be prepared to wait for it for a little while. The taxi to the city centre costs approximately 60 € for 1-4 persons. For more information, see the Finavia website.

Practical information

What's the weather like? What to pack? Where to dine? What is there to do in your free time?

Weather

In February, the weather might be rather cold, -20 degrees Celcius is not rare. Warm shoes, jacket, a hat and gloves are a must :) We recommend dressing up in layers so that you can keep warm outside and take off some of the layers inside where it is usually quite warm. You can check the weather forecast before packing for example at  http://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/weather/Jyväskylä

Dress code

In Finland, people tend to dress rather casually for work and there is no dress code for a normal day at the office. There is also no dress code for the social events of the week - come as you are!

Shopping

Shopping centres with several small stores (Forum, Jyväskeskus, Torikeskus) and department stores (Sokos) are all along Kauppakatu (the main street in the city). Shopping mall Seppä is located 1.5 km from the city centre. In the city centre, you can find grocery stores for example at Sokos. There are several OTTO cash dispensers along Kauppakatu.

Restaurants

There are several restaurants, pizzerias, hamburger places and cafés in the city centre. Hotels also have restaurants open to all. Check out some of the restaurants and cafés on the Visit Jyväskylä website

Smoking is prohibited indoors (also in restaurants, pubs etc.).

Student/staff cafeterias on campus

The cafeterias on campus offer ordinary, healthy meals and the prices range between 8 € - 11 €. Map and daily menus at www.semma.fi/en , www.ilokivi.fi/en/restaurant  and https://www.compass-group.fi/en.
