Take part in a research study on muscle fatigue and nervous system function
The study aims to better understand how the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system control muscle force and how their function changes during a fatiguing exercise task.
You can participate if you:
- are 18–49 years old
- are in good general health
- have a BMI below 35 kg/m²
- do not use performance-enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids
- are able to perform strength tests involving electrical and magnetic stimulation.
People with certain medical conditions or implants cannot participate, including cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, migraine, diabetes, neuropsychiatric or psychiatric disorders, serious respiratory, musculoskeletal or neurological conditions, upper-limb arthritis, pacemakers, cochlear implants or other implanted electronic/metal devices.
What does participation involve?
The study involves one measurement session lasting approximately 2 hours at the Sports and Health Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä (Rautpohjankatu 8). Measurements are conducted during September 2026, with the exact measurement time agreed individually with each participant.
During the session, you will:
- complete a health and eligibility questionnaire
- have your body composition measured using an InBody device
- perform maximal biceps strength tests
- perform repeated biceps contractions at approximately 30% of your maximum force
- have muscle activity measured using a 64-channel surface EMG electrode
- undergo brief electrical stimulation of the peripheral nervous system and brainstem
- undergo transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex.
All procedures used in the study are established research methods. Temporary fatigue, muscle soreness and mild discomfort from stimulation may occur.
What do you get from participating?
After the measurements, you receive information about your:
- body composition (muscle and fat mass)
- maximum biceps force
- nervous-system function and its response to fatigue.
Participation is voluntary. No financial compensation or travel reimbursement is provided.
