The number of applicants to JYU’s international programmes continues to increase
By the end of the application period yesterday, the MDPs starting in autumn 2021 had in total 1,783 applications that compete from 307 study places in 16 programmes. The total number of applicants was 1,373 because one person can apply for several programmes. Last year the number of applicants was 1,304 and the number of applications 1,722.
As in previous years, the most popular programmes were JSBE’s International Business and Entrepreneurship (296 applications), Digital Marketing and Corporate Communication (238), Banking and International Finance (195) and Corporate Environmental Management (152). More than hundred applications was also received for Educational Sciences (education), Information Systems and Cognitive Computing and Collective Intelligence (information technology) and Development, Education and International Cooperation (collaboration of education and social sciences).
The application for JYU’s international master’s degree programmes took place in the first joint application of the spring. One applicant was able to apply with the same electronic form for at the most six study options from any higher education institution participating in the joint application.
MDPs are a great path to internationalisation
The applicants came from 102 different countries from which the largest is Finland with 330 applicants. The number of applicants outside the EU/EEA countries was 904.
“The application results reflect that JYU’s education expertise is known all over the world and that our programmes are attractive and competitive,” says Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso. “It is great that the coronavirus pandemic did not reduce the number of applicants. I am also happy about that our international MDPs attract plenty of students from Finland. An international master’s degree programme can be an excellent way for internationalisation now when connections to foreign countries are unsure.”
The MDPs are available for both Finnish and international applicants with a suitable bachelor’s degree from Finland or elsewhere. The programmes last for two years and their extent is 120 ECTS credits. Students from outside the EU and EEA countries are charged a tuition fee. For part of them, the University awards a grant to cover tuition costs.
JYU has more than 1,000 international students every year. Around 250 of them study in international MDPs and the rest in doctoral programmes or as exchange students.
