The University of Jyväskylä cancels student exchanges in the autumn term 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic
The management of the University of Jyväskylä has decided on 3 June that the university will not send its students abroad for student exchanges or internships between 1 August and 31 December 2020. In practice, this decision means that JYU will not support student mobility financially nor assist in the administration of mobility, e.g. by signing Learning Agreements, for mobility periods which start between 1 August and 31 December 2020. The University of Jyväskylä has also made the decision not to accept exchange students or trainees in the autumn term 2020.
This decision does not concern compulsory mobility periods which are required as part of a degree, decisions on these will be made on a case-by-case basis. This decision also does not concern 1–2 week long intensive courses or other short-term mobility periods taking place in October–December 2020. A decision about these will be made in August, taking into consideration the pandemic situation then and possible national guidelines.
The decision was made based on the fact that JYU would not be able to offer its students a safe and high-quality mobility abroad period in the autumn term 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was made at this stage acknowledging that outgoing and incoming students need clear information about the upcoming autumn term as soon as possible in order to make the necessary arrangements. Several partner universities both outside and in Europe have also had to cancel student exchanges for the autumn term, and this also influenced JYU’s decision.
“We are very sorry for all those students whose long-awaited exchange period in the autumn has been cancelled,” says Director of Student and Academic Services, Mari Ikonen. “JYU wants to offer a safe and successful exchange experience to its students, which we unfortunately cannot guarantee in this uncertain situation.”
The International Office will create a FAQ webpage with answers to practical questions concerning the cancellation of exchanges.
