The University of Jyväskylä was placed 401–600 in the latest THE Impact Ranking, which is an assessment of universities’ societal impact, sustainability and responsibility. The assessment surveyed over 1,115 universities from 94 countries. Eight Finnish universities were included.

In addition to a general ranking, universities were given positions in 17 different categories with different goals.

JYU reached best results in the goal areas of climate action (position 92), life below water (101–200) and life on land (101–200).

For the third time, Times Higher Education published an impact ranking, which is based on assessing universities from the perspective of how they promote and implement the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

“Sustainability and responsibility are important themes in the strategy of the University of Jyväskylä,” says Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso. “The goal of our university is to show way in sustainable development and responsibility in Finland and globally. The university’s best positions in the ranking were in ecological sustainability, which means JYU’s strong research and cooperation in this sector as well as ecological sustainability in our operations and on the campus.”

The ranking methodology is based on 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations. They have been taken down to various qualitative and quantitative indicators that measure the impact, sustainability and responsibility of universities. Data for the assessment are collected directly from the universities and the Elsevier publication database.
