The assessment surveyed 766 universities all over the world. The assessment included 7 Finnish universities.

In addition to a general ranking, universities were given positions in 17 different categories, of which JYU took part in 8. The University achieved the best results in the categories of Climate Action (position 92), Affordable and Clean Energy (101–200) and Responsible Consumption and Production (101–200).

For the second time, Times Higher Education published an impact ranking, which is based on assessing universities from the perspective of how they promote and implement the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

“In compliance with our strategy, education at JYU underlines carrying responsibility for the wellbeing of ourselves and others,” says Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso. “This also includes the perspectives of global and ethical responsibility. The University’s best positions in the ranking were in ecological sustainability, which means JYU’s strong research and active societal impact in this sector as well as increasing ecological sustainability on our campus and in our operations.”

“THE Impact Ranking offers a new way to analyse universities’ societal impact, sustainability and responsibility,” she says. “Even though all sustainable development goals of the United Nations are not directly linked to universities’ operation, through research and education universities play an important role in society in reaching the goals both locally and globally.”

The ranking methodology is based on 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations. They have been taken down to various qualitative and quantitative indicators that measure the impact, sustainability and responsibility of universities. Data for the assessment are collected directly from the universities, the Elsevier publication database and the results of THE’s international reputation survey.
