Doctoral programmes

At the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), you can pursue a doctoral degree in philosophy, education, economics and business administration, sports sciences, psychology, technology, health sciences and social sciences, depending on the doctoral programme and specialisation option.

We are reforming our doctoral education and opening applications for six doctoral programmes starting on August 1, 2026, instead of the previous 18 programmes.

The reorganisation of the doctoral programmes is part of JYU's doctoral education reform, which aims to support the implementation of high-quality doctoral education.

Get ready to apply

Whether you are applying this spring or next autumn, it is a good idea to start preparing well in advance. Applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with the eligibility requirements, admission criteria, and application guidelines before the application period begins.

In addition to the application form, you will need to submit attachments, such as a research plan and a doctoral study plan. You must also contact a potential supervisor at JYU to arrange supervision for your doctoral dissertation. In summary, the main steps in applying for doctoral studies are:

  1. Get to know the doctoral programmes
  2. Check your eligibility
  3. Think about a possible research topic and familiarize yourself with funding options
  4. Find out the availability of relevant supervision
  5. Find out about the assessment procedure
  6. Submit your application

If you are interested in applying, please see the application guidelines and the JYU research website.

The online application form will be available on the Studyinfo.fi portal from 1 April 2026 onwards.
