Keijo Hämäläinen has been the rector of the University of Jyväskylä from 1 August 2017. Previously, he has served as a full-time vice rector (2014–2017), a dean of the Faculty of Science (2010–2013) and a professor of physics (2002–) at the University of Helsinki.

“On behalf of the University Board and the whole university community, I thank Keijo Hämäläinen for his excellent cooperation and successful term of office at JYU,” says Chair of the University Board Antti Koivula. “Hämäläinen has played a pivotal role in implementing JYU’s strategy ‘Wisdom and wellbeing for us all’, developing the university’s operations, and building the university community.”

“It has been my honour to share the past six years on this journey with the university community of Jyväskylä,” says Keijo Hämäläinen. “Naturally, I am sad but at the same time I am also confident about the future of the University of Jyväskylä. Important basic things are in order and the university is in an excellent position for success.”

The University Board will immediately start the search process for a new rector, utilising both open applications and executive search. The Board wants dialogue with the Collegium and the Student Union to hear the university community’s views on the profile of the future rector.

The Board will decide on the detail related to the application in its meeting of 5 April 2023.

In compliance with the Universities Act, the University Board elects the rector for a maximum term of five years.
