The University of Jyväskylä seeks a new rector

In its meeting of 5 April 2023, the University Board of the University of Jyväskylä decided on the call for applications for a new rector and the schedule of application process. The application will start on 11 April 2023 and end on 7 May 2023. The recruitment will utilise both open applications and executive search.

“The new rector is expected to have a strategic and future-oriented approach as well as excellent familiarity with the university world,” says Chair of the University Board Antti Koivula. “Our aim is to find a person who has strong experience of leadership in an expert organisation and of national and international cooperation with various interest groups.“

In compliance with the Universities Act, the University Board elects the rector for a maximum term of five years. The rector is required to have a doctoral degree, abilities and professional competencies needed in the position as well as good leadership skills demonstrated in practice. The rector will lead the University’s education, research and societal interaction in an effective and efficient manner. The rector will also prepare matters that come before the University Board and implement the Board’s decisions.

Keijo Hämäläinen, the current rector of the University of Jyväskylä will move to lead Tampere University from 1 June 2023. Marja-Leena Laakso, the vice rector responsible for education, will take care of rector’s duties from 21 April 2023 when Keijo Hämäläinen will leave his position at the University of Jyväskylä.
