University of Jyväskylä prepares for possible power outages

Because of lack of electricity resulting from the international energy crisis, it is possible there will be planned power outages and they are estimated to last one and a half to two hours at a time. When possible, electricity companies will notify their clients about the outages in advance.

Planned power outages will not impact all buildings of the University at a time.

Sudden power outages are also possible and their time and duration cannot be predicted. The Alva website (Outage map alva.fi) will provide more information on the extent and duration of the power outage.

The University does not recommend using its facilities during a power outage longer than thirty minutes. During such outages, only essential persons are allowed to work in the facilities. Ylistönrinne is estimated to have special risks related to safety. Therefore, in some facilities people must be evacuated quickly in case of a power outage. More information will be provided in connection of a power outage.

Personal preparation for power outages

  • Before an outage: Keep your computer and telephone charged. If you have a backup power source, be prepared to use it if necessary. Consider in advance how an outage impacts your working.
  • During a power outage: Follow the University’s instructions and bulletins related to the outage. Minimise the power consumption of your devices. Avoid unnecessary calls because to avoid overloading mobile networks.
  • After the outage: Take electric appliances in use gradually and one by one, so that the power would not be cut again due to a sudden increase of load.
