University of Jyväskylä to award 11 honorary doctorates

The University of Jyväskylä will award 11 new honorary doctorates in May 2026. The twelfth Conferment of Degrees Ceremony for the whole University will be held on 22–24 May 2026.

The faculties of the University award honorary doctorates to persons with meritorious work for the benefit of society or science. A great number of masters and doctors are also expected to participate in the conferment ceremony.

– The conferral of an honorary doctorate is a tribute by the university for significant work on behalf of the university and society. The faculties of the University of Jyväskylä have selected an exceptionally distinguished group of individuals who are important to our university to receive this honor, says rector Jari Ojala.

The Act of Conferment and the conferment procession will be held on Saturday, 23 May 2026. The procession proceeds from the Main Building of the University of Jyväskylä to Taulumäki church. Audience may watch the procession along the route.

The University will award honorary doctorates to the following distinguished persons:

  • Executive vice-president of the European Commission Henna Virkkunen

Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics

  • Professor Eero Vaara
  • Executive Director of IEA Fatih Birol

Faculty of Education and Psychology

  • Professor Lars-Erik Malmberg
  • Professor emerita Laura Lundy

Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences

  • Professor Susanne Iwarsson
  • President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb

Faculty of Mathematics and Science

  • Professor Johanna Ivaska
  • Professor Karen Smith
