Slovak language teaching at the University of Jyväskylä - unique in the Nordic countries
The University of Jyväskylä is the only university in the Nordic countries where you can study Slovak. Teaching started back in 1979, and every year around 30 students from different disciplines - from languages to sports, from business to IT - take part in the courses.
"The course is taught in a hybrid format, which allows for flexible participation," says Anna Kyppö, a class teacher.
"In spring, we also offer a course on Slavic languages and peoples, which introduces the diversity of Slavic languages and cultures from the perspective of the speakers."
The university has long-standing partnerships with Slovak universities such as Comenius University (Studia Academica Slovaca), Košice University and Nitra University. Students have been participating in Slovak summer schools since the 1980s and the Slovak Ministry of Education and Culture supports this participation through scholarships and exchange programmes.
In October, a visiting teacher from Comenius University will also come to Jyväskylä in the framework of the Erasmus cooperation.
