What kind of cup is born when meeting clay with friendship? And how does rhythm take shape from the perspective of friendship? What does friendship require, and can it guide us toward genuine dialogue?

In the Workshops on Friendly Encounters (November 11–12, 2025), we will explore friendship both as a concrete and metaphorical artistic and art educational practice.

On Tuesday, November 11, 10:00–16:00, we will dedicate our time to coffee, clay, and the principles of friendship. In this workshop, participants will create cups and prepare hot drinks with friendship.

On Wednesday, November 12, 10:00–16:00, we will approach rhythm from the perspective of friendship. Together, we will create shared rhythms and explore being with rhythm through movement, beatboxing, and singing. Hot drinks will also be prepared and enjoyed together during the workshop.

The workshops are open to students and staff of the University of Jyväskylä and will take place in the clay studio (C411) on the 4th floor of the Main Building. Participation is on a drop-in basis — you may stop by for a while or stay longer according to your schedule. However, please note that clay work, for example, requires at least 1.5 hours of working time.

These workshops are concrete outcomes of the research interests of Joonas Suomalainen-Sallinen (Doctoral Researcher in Art Education, JYU) and Otso Mielonen (Master’s Student in Music Pedagogy, RMC), who share an interest in dialogical practices in art education.
