Book, journal, article and database acquisition

The Open Science Centre ensures that the students and staff of JYU have the library materials they need.

The Open Science Centre acquires library materials primarily to meet the Jyväskylä University’s needs of research, teaching, and learning. The following factors are taken into account in the acquisition process.

User needs and suggestions

Materials are primarily acquired for use by JYU staff and students. We also order course materials required for degrees at the University of Jyväskylä. You can suggest new materials using the library’s online form.

Cost, availability, and licenses

We evaluate the price, terms of use, and licenses for the library materials. For digital materials in particular, access rights are determined by the publisher’s terms. For example, we consider how many users can access the material simultaneously. We also compare different acquisition models (such as individual e-books versus collection bundles) to ensure cost-effectiveness.

It is not always necessary to acquire materials for the library's collections; they can also be requested as interlibrary loans from another library. See also the instructions for finding open-access articles and publications.

Departmental book purchases for staff use

Since the University of Jyväskylä has outsourced the procurement of printed materials to selected contract suppliers, work-related books are ordered through the library. The library handles the procurement process, while the ordering unit covers the costs. For departmental purchases, please use the library’s online form.
