Biography

I work as a University Teacher of Finnish and Finnish as a Second Language at the Open University. In addition, I supervise doctoral dissertations and teach the Finnish as a Second Language Project Course at the Department of Language and Communication Studies.

Research interests

My areas of expertise are language and work, multilingualism, and Finnish as a second language. I investigate language questions from the viewpoints of critical sociolinguistics and discourse studies that see language as interwoven with social structures and political economy. I do mostly ethnographic research which aims at rich description of the research phenomenon in a certain time and place. At the moment, I focus especially on multilingual freelancers who do text work via digital labor platforms.

My dissertation focused on learning Finnish in cleaning work. Further, I have explored multilingualism and language practices in the contexts of the mining industry, tourism, and vocational education.
