Biography

My areas of expertise are language and work, multilingualism, and Finnish as a second language. In my current project, I explore multilingual freelancers who sell their skills through digital labour platforms. My dissertation focused on learning Finnish in cleaning work. Further, I have explored multilingualism and language practices in the contexts of the mining industry, tourism, and vocational education. I have taught courses in Finnish language, discourse studies, and language expert lines. I supervise dissertations in the field of Finnish language and applied linguistics.

Research interests

I investigate language questions in working life from the viewpoints of critical sociolinguistics and discourse studies that see language as interwoven with social structures and political economy. I do mostly ethnographic research which aims at rich description of the research phenomenon in a certain time and place. At the moment, I focus especially on multilingual freelancers who do text work via digital labor platforms.
