Biography

I am a Full Professor of Cybersecurity at the Faculty of Information Technology since October 2025.

I received my M.Sc. in computer science from the University of Helsinki in 2002. After that I worked as a research engineer and senior researcher at the Nokia Research Center in Helsinki and Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2012 I transferred to Darmstadt, Germany, working as a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT). In 2013, I joined the System Security Lab at the department of computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where I also received my doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) in 2018. From 2023 to 2025 I was professor for IT-Security at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.

Research interests

My research interests are centred around the use of rich contextual information and advanced machine learning and AI algorithms in the realisation of security functionalities, e.g., for intrusion detection in the Internet of Things (IoT). I am also interested in security for AI, i.e., investigating attacks utilising and targeting AI algorithms, defences against such attacks as well as measures for increasing the resilience of AI algorithms against malicious manipulations.
