Biography

I am professor in applied ecology. My field of expertise is sustainability of use of natural resources, and in particular forests. I have studied several organismal groups living in forests, and in particular birds and the flying squirrels.

I am a member of the Expert Panel for Sustainable Development (https://www.kestavyyspaneeli.fi/en/). The panel is an independent body, which helps to lead Finland towards sustainable development by adding scientific and ethical views to decision-making processes and societal dialogue.

Research interests

Research of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services reveals possibilities to reconcile economically effective timber production with societally and economically sustainable use of forests. This research provides knowledge about multifunctionality of forest ecosystems to all stakeholders.
