AIDEA - AI-Driven Educators Academy
The AI-Driven Educators Academy project has been launched with the objective of strengthening teacher education systems across Europe in response to the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in school education. Supported under the Erasmus+ Teacher Academies action, the project aims to equip pre-service and in-service teachers with the competences required to understand, use, and critically engage with AI in pedagogically meaningful, ethical, and inclusive ways.
Project description
As AI increasingly influences teaching, learning, assessment, and school organisation, European education systems face an urgent need to ensure that educators are adequately prepared for this transformation. AIDEA addresses this challenge by establishing a transnational Academy that will develop and pilot an innovative, research-informed, and practice-oriented framework for teacher professional development in AI.
The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium from 8 European countries, comprising higher education institutions, teacher education providers, research organisations, schools, and other key educational stakeholders. Through this collaboration, AIDEA will design and validate a comprehensive training ecosystem that supports teachers in integrating AI into educational practice, while also fostering critical awareness of the societal, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of AI.
AIDEA is structured around three complementary strands of teacher competence development:
- Teaching About AI, supporting educators in developing a foundational understanding of AI concepts, systems, and implications;
- Teaching With AI, focusing on the pedagogically sound use of AI tools to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment;
- Teaching For AI, preparing learners to participate responsibly and critically in an AI-shaped society.
Within this framework, the project will deliver:
- a modular European training curriculum for AI in teacher education;
- open educational resources and practice-oriented learning materials;
- an AI-powered digital learning hub to support access, collaboration, and knowledge exchange;
- piloting and validation activities involving teachers, student teachers, school leaders, and learners in different national contexts;
- mobility and peer-learning opportunities aimed at strengthening transnational cooperation and professional exchange among educators.
AIDEA places particular emphasis on the responsible and trustworthy integration of AI in education. The project addresses key issues, including fairness, transparency, bias, data protection, inclusion, and human oversight, ensuring that technological innovation remains aligned with European educational values and democratic principles.
The expected outcomes of the project include enhanced AI literacy among teachers, stronger institutional capacity within teacher education systems, improved pedagogical innovation in schools, and evidence-based recommendations to support policy development at national and European levels. By promoting collaboration between initial teacher education, continuous professional development, and school practice, AIDEA seeks to contribute to a coherent and sustainable European approach to AI in education.
Through its activities, AIDEA aspires to build a strong European community of educators who are capable of engaging with AI not only as users of new tools, but also as reflective professionals and active contributors to the future of education.
