Consensus project

Project description
Our research project will focus on Finnish political decision-making in the fields of foreign, security and defence policy. The rationale of our project stems from the idea of political consensus that seems to be in a significant role in Finnish politics especially when foreign and defence policy is concerned, and from the idea of deliberative democracy in which decision-making should be preceded by a broad enough political discussion. In this project, we are interested to explore and analyze a variety of sources to understand how decision-makers themselves perceive decision-making as a process and the information they have during the decision-making.
We intend to interview Finnish Members of Parliament and explore various published sources to explore the views of the politicians towards the decision-making.
Some key themes in our project are the Finnish application process to NATO in 2022, military conscription and the Finnish willingness to defend.
Kone Foundation has awarded the research project with a multiyear funding.
The project was launched in May 2023.
