DemoEPR: Demonstrating Innovative Extended Producer Responsibility Solutions for Circular Economy

DemoEPR rethinks how EPR systems work, shifting the focus from waste to value.
The project focuses on the ICT sector, where products have short lifetimes and generate increasing waste.

Project description

DemoEPR is a European project designed to rethink how Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) can support a true circular economy.

Today, many EPR systems focus mainly on recycling. While this has improved waste management, it does not fully support higher-value circular strategies such as reuse, repair and product life extension.

Focusing on the ICT sector, the project develops and tests solutions that improve how products are tracked, reused and managed over time. This includes combining policy work, digital innovation and real-world testing to better understand how EPR systems can function more effectively.

University of Jyväskylä's part in DemoEPR

University of Jyväskylä is leading work package 2 "Technologies for extending product life and retention of material value" in DemoEPR. WP2 involves developing a mobile data security unit and automated analytics for used ICP equipment.

JYU will develop critical raw material recovery pathways for damaged components. All of these advanced technologies are piloted during the project, to demonstrate how they can improve the circularity in the ICT sector.

Our WP2 partners are Swappie, Alva yhtiöt and Green Disposal.
