Project description

Integration på svenska is a three-year research project in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Helsinki and Åbo Akademi University. This project is examining the integration in Swedish language in Finland with a view of education solutions. The goal is to generate new knowledge about how Swedish-medium education currently functions, and how it can serve as a viable and sustainable educational alternative for children and young people with an immigrant background.

The project consists of three Work Packages: Rights (Work Package 1), Experiences at the local municipality level (Work Package 2) and Experiences at the school level (Work Package 3). Every work package has its own research group. The University of Jyväskylä is responsible for Work Package 2.

Work Package 2 examines the experiences of integration in Swedish language at the local policy level. We study, how the municipal guidelines and practices influence the opportunities of students with an immigrant background to enter Swedish-medium comprehensive schools and integrate in Swedish.

The research data consists of interviews with municipal education authorities, school principals, local decision-makers and experts in immigration and integration work. In addition, we analyze relevant documents, such as curricula and municipal decisions.
