Project description

PROMISES

The PROMISES project at the University of Jyväskylä examines the construction, maintenance, and revival of techno-scientific promises and their implications for sustainability transitions. Whether fulfilled or not, promises align actors, institutions, and capital; guide activities; provide structure and legitimacy; reduce uncertainty; and foster and steer investment. By exploring the evolution of techno-scientific promises and expert communities in the nuclear sector, over time and across countries, the project generates new knowledge on how such factors foster and hinder sustainability transitions. The project studies the evolution of nuclear-sector promises and related “epistemic communities” in Finland, Canada, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
