Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare) is one of the 12 Centres of Excellence that the Research Council of Finland has chosen for the period 2018-2025. Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are at the very cutting edge of science in their fields, carving out new avenues for research, developing creative research environments and innovations, and training new talented researchers for the Finnish research and business sectors.

CoE AgeCare studies the transformation of ageing and care using novel conceptual and interdisciplinary perspectives, conjoining the analysis of diversification of everyday life to that of ongoing profound societal and policy change. The CoE combines scholarship from social policy, sociology and gerontology, analysing older people’s care needs, agency and equality as well as the changing character of care work in the context of transnationalisation and digitalisation of the ageing society. 

CoE AgeCare is a joint project of four research groups at the Universities of Jyväskylä, Tampere and Helsinki, in close collaboration with leading international researchers in the field. The unit also serves as an international training forum for young researchers.

• Ageing and comparative care policy -group is led by Professor Teppo Kröger from the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyväskylä.
• Agency in health, well-being and care in old age' -group is led by Dr. Outi Jolanki and Professor Marja Jylhä from the Tampere University.
• Migration, care and ageing -group is led by Professor Sirpa Wrede from the Department of Social Research, University of Helsinki.
• New technologies, ageing and care -group is led by Professor Sakari Taipale from the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyväskylä.

In all, the four teams include more than 60 researchers. The CoE collaborates closely with a large network of research projects and institutes from Finland, other parts of Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
