Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging

Inverse modelling is an interdisciplinary field of science that concentrates on the mathematical theory and practical interpretation of indirect measurements. In addition to purely mathematical problems, the research in the Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging focuses on problems encountered in medical imaging, geophysical prospecting and nondestructive testing. The methods of inverse problems bring the advances of modern mathematics to a vast number of applied areas. The Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging is internationally recognized as the world's leading unit in the field.

Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging coordinated by the University of Helsinki. Inverse problems research group of the University of Jyväskylä led by Mikko Salo and Joonas Ilmavirta is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging. Research at the University of Jyväskylä focuses especially on the mathematical models of electronic and Earth imaging. This research field also has applications in medical imaging, such as X-ray tomography and ultrasonography. In addition, large-scale applications can be found in seismic research, which studies earthquakes and movement of the earth’s crust.
