Research group description
Violence is a complex and challenging phenomenon. High-level research and education are needed in order to understand and mitigate its effects and solve related problems. In recent years, the demand for research and expertise on violence and its consequences has been observed within various fields. It is viewed as a serious issue particularly among experts and professionals in health and social care as well as education. Violence in the context of working life and, for example, the role and relationship of culture, arts and journalism to violence, are highly topical themes. They are highlighted in the practices of everyday life and in public debate as well as in national and international scientific forums. Various fields need researchers, experts and professionals who have studied violence as well as its manifestations and effects. In addition to the required theoretical qualifications, these experts must have the ability to apply their competences.
In the violence research conducted at the University of Jyväskylä, the main focus has been on violence outside the sphere of the organised state monopoly on violence. The key areas have included the forms of violence encountered in daily life, institutions, media and culture. In addition to research and education in social and behavioural sciences, research and education with a humanistic, theoretical and philosophical orientation are also prerequisites for dealing with violence as a social problem and challenge. The violence research undertaken in various subjects at the University of Jyväskylä provides an excellent opportunity to respond to this challenge together with local, national and international partners. Our strengths include a high theoretical level of research and close connections between research and practice, which provide a basis for nationally and globally outstanding research and teaching in Violence Studies.
