Guidelines for indicating author affiliation in publications

Affiliation refers to the institution the authors of scientific publications are associated with.

Please mark the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) as your affliation whenever your publication is based on research or other expert work related to the activities of our university. There can be more than one affiliation, but the first one always refers to the university where the research (or most of it) was carried out.

It is important that the affiliation is correctly cited in the publication so that the publication can later be recorded to the correct organisation and author in statistics and reference databases.

Below are some examples of the correct way to mark the affiliation of JYU in English. The most important thing is that JYU is always mentioned in the affiliation. If the author wishes, he or she can then add, for example, the name of a department or a particular research centre. The affiliation can also be indicated using Scandinavian characters.

  • University of Jyväskylä, Department of Education, Jyväskylä, Finland
  • University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Jyväskylä, Finland
  • University of Jyväskylä, Department of Physics, Nanoscience Center, Jyväskylä, Finland

Sometimes a publication is written only after the employment relationship with the university where the main research work was done has ended. Researchers coming to or leaving the University of Jyväskylä must ensure that the first affiliation of future publications always refers to the university where the research was carried out. Therefore, the affiliation of the publication and the author's current organisation and contact details are not always the same.

Please make sure that the affiliation of the University of Jyväskylä is correctly indicated not only in publications but also in reference databases (e.g. Dimensions, WoS/Clarivate, Scopus/Elsevier).

When using two or more affiliations, it is important to note that the order of affiliations may be significant, particularly if the corresponding author is from the University of Jyväskylä and wishes to publish the article openly under the OA agreements negotiated by the Open Science Centre. Many publishers only consider the first-listed affiliation when determining eligibility for open access agreements and may disregard any additional affiliations listed for the corresponding author.
