Requesting an ISBN

ISBN is an international standard number identifying books or other works. It is free of charge. For works published at the University of Jyväskylä, an ISBN identifier can be requested from the Open Science Centre.

ISBN is given to all works that have the same content as a book. The form of the work can therefore be, for example, a printed book or an audiovisual or electronic recording.

You may request an ISBN from the Open Science Centre by email:
numeroin@library.jyu.fi

We ask you to include the following information:

  • The title
  • Author(s)/Editor(s)
  • Edition number (1., 2., etc.)
  • Year of publication
  • Each publication format (print, electronic, PDF, ePub etc.)

If you publish in JYU Dissertations (series for doctoral dissertations), JYU Studies or JYU Reports, ISBN’s are automatically attached to the publication during the publication process.

For publications other than those produced at the University of Jyväskylä, the ISBN is granted by the National ISBN Agency operating in the National Library of Finland.

Including the ISBN in the publication

Please clearly indicate the ISBN you have received in your publication. The ISBN should be placed on the copyright page (usually on the reverse side of the title page, i.e. at the beginning of the publication). The same page should also include other basic information about the publication, such as the authors, year of publication, and copyright details.

If necessary, you may request instructions at openpublishing@jyu.fi.

If the publication has multiple formats, each format must have its own ISBN, and each ISBN should be clearly indicated in the publication, for example:

ISBN 978-952-1234-56-7 (PDF)
ISBN 978-952-1234-56-7 (print)

Accessibility of online publications

Please remember that all online publications produced at our university must be accessible. Ensuring accessibility is the responsibility of the authors. The Open Science Centre will check the accessibility of the publication before it is transferred to JYX. Please be prepared for a possible delay and for the file to be returned to you if its accessibility does not meet the requirements set by law.

Accessibility guidelines

You can send the finished online publication to jyx@jyu.fi, from where it will be transferred to the university’s JYX publication archive. The Open Science Centre will automatically add the publication details to the Converis research information system.
