Citizen Science at the JYU

Citizen science invites everyone to participate in scientific research—whether you're a layperson or a professional! You can contribute by collecting, classifying, or analyzing data, and at the same time, gain insight into scientific work. The University of Jyväskylä offers a wealth of information and opportunities to engage in collaborative science.

Welcome to citizen science!

Citizen science refers to scientific research conducted not only by trained scientists but also by ordinary people—citizen scientists. They can participate in various ways, such as collecting, classifying, or analyzing research data, or even co-developing research topics together with scientists.

Citizen science is a dialogue between researchers and citizens—collaborative work and shared learning. Although the term itself is relatively new, citizens have been involved in scientific endeavors for nearly as long as modern scientific culture has existed. Through the collective power of citizen scientists, it becomes possible to explore broad areas of research that might otherwise remain untouched. By participating, more people can contribute to knowledge that affects themselves, their communities, and overall well-being.

The University of Jyväskylä promotes the accessibility of research and provides information about citizen science for both citizens and researchers. We explain how to get involved and support the creation of new citizen science initiatives.

For Citizen Scientists

Citizen science offers a chance to learn something new, influence societal issues, and contribute to scientific progress and discovery. You can, for example:

  • Help researchers understand the state of nature and environmental changes.
  • Solve scientific problems by participating in gamified projects.
  • Comment on, analyze, and interpret research data.
  • Observe nature or environmental changes in your local surroundings, such as your backyard or neighborhood.
  • Co-develop new research questions with scientists on topics that interest you—such as user experiences with digital services, local air quality, or community well-being.

A key feature of citizen science is that anyone can contribute to the creation of knowledge—not just professional researchers. Natural sciences, in particular, have a long tradition of citizen involvement. For example, the Finnish Bird Atlas, a nationwide survey of breeding birds, would not be possible at its current scale without volunteers.

Citizen science is important because it generates new knowledge. Participation also fosters a sense of community and shared effort: in a citizen science project, you may meet others who share your interests. It also offers a unique opportunity to experience scientific research up close.

Participation is always voluntary, and your level of involvement can vary—from one-time contributions to long-term observation and engagement.

Citizen science is built on openness, interaction, and inclusion. It’s your science.

Current Topics in Citizen Science at the JYU

Muuttolintujen kevät - Spring of Migratory Birds

What's it about: This project collects bird observations, which are identified by species using machine learning and artificial intelligence. The data helps researchers understand seasonal patterns in species occurrence, daily behavior over short periods, and long-term environmental changes.

How to participate: Have you ever wondered which birds are singing in your backyard, by your summer cottage, or along your commute—but couldn’t identify them? Download the Spring of Migratory Birds app from your app store (Apple Store or Google Play), review the terms of use, and head outdoors to record bird sounds using your smart device. All user data is anonymous.

Download the app: Android iPhone

Porrastesti - Stair Test

What's it about: The Stair Test is a low-threshold fitness test designed for adults. Using a mobile app developed at the University of Jyväskylä, you can assess your cardiorespiratory fitness and receive an estimate of your fitness level. The app also allows you to track changes over time and learn more about factors that affect endurance. By completing the Stair Test, you also contribute to research at the University of Jyväskylä and help improve the accuracy and usability of the test.

How to participate: Download the Stair Test app from your app store and test your endurance. The app is free and available for both Android and Apple iPhone devices. Individual users cannot be identified.

The app is currently in a pilot phase and is being tested in Jyväskylä during 2025. You can take the test at four different locations near the city center. The test involves walking at a pace suitable for your fitness level and is not intended to be maximal in intensity. It only takes a few minutes to complete, so you can easily combine it with a visit to the library or a walk.
