For Juliana Campos, the Development, Education and International Cooperation (DEICO) Master’s Degree programme at JYU opened the door to understanding global change through the lens of education. With a passion for learning and a strong interest in how societies develop, she found in DEICO the perfect balance between theory, practice, and international collaboration. The programme offered exactly what she had been looking for — a global perspective on development combined with a strong focus on education.

When I began looking for a master’s programme, I wanted to understand how societal change and development take place on a global scale. Development is a broad field, with opportunities to focus on a range of issues: environmental sustainability, health, gender, and human rights. For me, education has always been what I´m most passionate about. From there, choosing the DEICO programme (Development, Education and International Cooperation) was an easy decision. It offered exactly what I was looking for: a global perspective on development combined with a strong focus on education.

Now, in my second year, I feel confident as a researcher and have gained a broader perspective as both a global thinker and an educator.

Learning in an international community

What stood out to me early on was how international the DEICO community is. Students come from all over the world and bring their own experiences into the classroom.

The programme encourages open dialogue and critical thinking, creating an environment where you learn from your peers and compare how education and development are approached in different parts of the world.

I’ve really enjoyed the diversity of perspectives in these discussions and how DEICO’s development lens deepens conversations about education systems and critical pedagogy.

Examining education and pedagogy from many perspectives

DEICO encourages you to look at global challenges from multiple angles and to connect what you learn with your own experiences. The programme is structured enough to give you direction but flexible enough to let you design your own path.

In the Education track, one of my highlights has been taking joint courses with the EDUMA programme (Master’s in Educational Sciences). I’ve really enjoyed the diversity of perspectives in these discussions and how DEICO’s development lens deepens conversations about education systems and critical pedagogy.

Another thing I value is how the courses are organised. Because they come in different lengths, you get to explore many topics within one semester. This helps you identify and refine your research interests. The support throughout the research process is excellent, and there are plenty of resources to help along the way.
