After almost ten years working in an international career, Kalindunie Kulathunga made the decision to return to academia and pursue a long-time dream of studying in Finland. With a strong background in both IT and supply chain management, her journey brought her to JYU, where she is currently studying in the Master’s Degree Programme in Information Systems — a place that has offered her both academic growth and a true sense of belonging.  According to Kalindunie, the academic life at JYU is interactive, engaging and motivating.

I am Kalindunie, originally from Sri Lanka. Before moving to Finland, I worked for eight years as an Assistant Manager – Supply Chain at Dipped Products PLC, a global manufacturer and exporter of gloves.

In this dynamic role, I was involved in procurement, logistics, IT, and international sales and marketing. I coordinated with teams, suppliers, and global customers, solved day-to-day issues, analyzed data, and took part in planning while building strong, long-term partnerships.

No matter how challenging the work became, I always enjoyed teamwork and the friendly atmosphere at my workplace.

Blending IT Knowledge with Management Practice

Although I hold a Bachelor of Science in Special Degree in Computing & Information Systems, I chose to pursue a career in supply chain management during the final year of my studies out of curiosity. Interestingly, there was not a single day I did not apply my knowledge of Information Systems in my role.

This unique combination of IT skills and management expertise helped me become a progressive and high-performing employee, earning multiple promotions along the way.

Recognizing strengths and choosing to continue studies

I realised that, while effective management is one of my core strengths, my knowledge of IT and information systems has been the critical success factor in my career.

This inspired me to pursue a Master’s Degree Programme in Information Systems at the University of Jyväskylä — a decision I consider one of the best I have ever made.

A long-time dream of Finland and a committed journey of preparation

My dream of studying in Finland began in 2019 after discovering YouTube videos about the Finnish education system. Since then, I have regularly followed Studyinfo website to learn about programmes and application periods.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, I finally had the chance to apply in 2023, with JYU as my top choice. I was thrilled to get an interview. I joined it at 7 p.m. Sri Lankan time after a long day at work. Waiting for the results was just as intense. I stayed up late scrolling through my phone, full of hope and excitement.

Proud to be part of the JYU community

Being admitted to such a high-ranking university in Finland, and in Europe, was a proud and joyful moment. I initially thought restarting academic life after seven years would be difficult, but I was pleasantly surprised.
