Anuruvi Mirisse Lankage found her passion for nanoscience during her bachelor’s studies. After working as a university teaching assistant, where she supported students in practical experiments and lab sessions, she decided to continue her studies and found the interdisciplinary Nanoscience Master’s Programme at the JYU. Now living in Finland, she feels confident in her choice and looks forward to what the future holds. She feels that choosing Nanoscience at JYU was the best decision she had made.
I’m Anuruvi from Sri Lanka, and science has always been my passion. During my bachelor’s thesis, I explored the sunlight-reflective properties of CaCO₃ nanoparticles, which completely changed how I see science. It showed me how scale and structure can transform a material’s behavior. I got fascinated about nanoscience and its potential to shape the future through clever use of scale, structures and big ideas.
After my bachelor’s, I worked as a teaching assistant, guiding students in labs. I loved it, but it also showed me how much more I wanted to learn. That’s when I knew it was time to take the next step.
The interdisciplinary nature of Nanoscience programme caught attention
I started searching for master’s programmes around the world. That’s when I came across the webpage of the Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience at the University of Jyväskylä. The interdisciplinary nature of the course caught my attention immediately.
The programme blends chemistry, physics, and biology and it matched perfectly with my passion for exploring nanoscience from multiple angles, and especially through the lens of chemistry. After reading the requirements, which matched my qualifications, I applied through the joint application system in January 2024—with high hopes (and a little bit of praying).
Curiosity about the smallest scales of matter led me to Jyväskylä
By late March, I had already been admitted into two other programmes at different universities. But in my heart, I was waiting for the JYU results. And then came the moment I had been hoping for as I got accepted! I can still remember the joy and relief I felt. All the waiting and hoping had been worth it. I accepted the study place right away and began preparing for this new chapter.
I enjoy not only the courses and lab sessions but also the wider experiences that come with being part of this community.
Looking back now, I can see how curiosity about the smallest scales of matter led me straight to Jyväskylä. Choosing Nanoscience at JYU feels like the best decision I’ve made. I enjoy not only the courses and lab sessions but also the wider experiences that come with being part of this community.
I am grateful for where this path is taking me and truly excited for the future opportunities.
