Eligibility criteria
To be eligible, you must hold a Bachelor of Science (or any nationally recognised first-cycle degree equivalent to 180 ECTS credits), preferably in the fields of physics engineering, physics or similar. The degree must give eligibility to master’s-level degree studies in the degree-awarding country.
The higher education institution awarding the degree must be a recognised part of the official national education system of the country, i.e., listed as a degree-granting higher education institution by the country where it is located or by a relevant international organisation (such as UNESCO).
The degree used for proving eligibility may be unfinished at the time of application, in which case, you may be admitted on a conditional basis. In this case, the degree must be completed by the middle of July.
English proficiency demonstrated as follows:
- An upper secondary education completed in English in an EU/EEA country, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
- A higher education degree completed in English in an EU/EEA country or one of the following: Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada, Dominica, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, Zimbabwe
- 25 ECTS credits completed in English at a Finnish university during the current or past two academic years and by the end of the application period
- A Finnish- or Swedish-medium higher education degree completed at a Finnish higher education institution, with a command of a foreign language in English per the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004) or the Government Decree on Universities of Applied Sciences (1129/2014)
- A higher education degree completed or being completed in Finland, with the English language as a major or specialisation
- An approved English language proficiency test that meets the minimum result:
- IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, or IELTS for UKVI Academic: 6.5 (overall score)
- TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, or TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: 92 (MyBest score)
- PTE Academic, PTE Academic Online, or PTE Academic UKVI: 62 (overall score)
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency: A, B, C, or C1
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: A, B, or C
- National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) in English: You must have received a grade 5 or higher at the advanced level in all components (speaking, writing, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension). You may combine test results from multiple dates. Only YKI tests completed in 2002 and thereafter are accepted.
If you prove your English skills using your degree, and the degree is still incomplete at the time of application, it must be the same as the one used as the basis for eligibility.
IELTS, PTE and TOEFL results must be valid until the end of the application period. Only Cambridge tests completed in 2005 and thereafter are accepted. If your language test result is released after the application period has ended, the test report form must be released by and be valid on the deadline date for submitting attachments.
If you fail to demonstrate your English skills by one of the above methods, your application will be rejected. The University does not consider test report forms received after the specified deadline. The University does not grant waivers for language requirements.
Admissions procedure
Online application, required attachments and interview
The selection of students will be managed with an electronic application form available on the programme website. The admission procedure from the application phase through to the official selection phase will also be described on the website. Applicants must create an account on the online application platform prior to uploading application documentation. Application details and attached documentation can be modified by the applicant until the application deadline.
Complete eligible applications are first pre-evaluated according to the joint selection criteria and scoring table as indicated below:

This pre-evaluation is scored on a scale of 5 (5=Excellent, 4=Very good, 3=Good, 2=Satisfactory, 1=Sufficient, 0=Insufficient). All applications above the threshold of 3.5 out of 5 of the pre-evaluation score are moderated using the same criteria and weighting system and short-listed.
Short-listed applicants are interviewed. Your performance is scored on a scale of 5 (5=Excellent, 4=Very good, 3=Good, 2=Satisfactory, 1=Sufficient, 0=Insufficient), along with qualitative comments on your performance.

Final selection
Rejected applicants will be notified of the outcome two months after the end of the Call for Applications at the latest. They will receive personal feedback and instructions for requesting rectification of the admission decision.
The final selection is agreed upon during an Academic and Management Board, by full consensus of the Local Academic Coordinators based on pre-evaluation, moderation and interview grades. Selection outcome and final rank are not based only on the average grade but reflect the discussion and agreement of the Academic and Management Board.
The results, including absolute ranking in decreasing order of merit, will be published on the programme website two months after the end of the Call for Applications at the latest. All applicants will be notified by email.
Selected applicants must send their paper, original application file to the coordinating institution by registered post by the end of June. All official educational documents (degree certificates and transcripts of records) will be checked to see if they comply with the registration policies of the full partner universities.
