Master's Degree Programme in Game Studies
The Master’s Programme in Game Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary course focusing on the theory and research of games and game cultures. In the programme, students focus on various approaches to games and game play. In addition to theoretical depth, there is a strong practical aspect in the programme which is established through game projects and an internship.
The programme prepares students for careers requiring profound understanding of games and ability to engage in games and gameplay related research, in the context of eg. public policy making. The students will be also qualified for research-intensive employment; the MA degree qualifies students for enrolment in doctoral studies.
Our teaching is based on cutting edge game research, by top researchers. Through the studies, you will get involved with the vibrant Finnish game development scene.

Student profile
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field is required as a prerequisite for the Game Studies programme. The field of previous studies is not intended to be strictly defined; practical experience in the games industry is also considered an advantage.
As a Game Studies student, you will meet and network with students from different countries, disciplines and backgrounds.
Through group or pair work, discussions, presentations, and independent work in a multilingual environment, we enable our students to develop various sets of skills needed for professional life.

Career opportunities for Game Studies graduates
The graduate is uniquely qualified to work in research oriented positions in game industry - but also on other fields where gamification or game cultures are present. The practical emphasis in studies prepares you for careers in e.g. game design and player community management, the theoretical emphasis for research careers in game studies.
Our graduates are capable to find, assess, and utilise academic knowledge and apply scientific methods to problem-solving in an ethically sound manner and able to analyse games, game play and game cultures. You can also use technical, reflective and aesthetic skills from game design to work out innovative solutions to contemporary societal challenges.
