Writing a master’s thesis is one of the most meaningful – and often most challenging – parts of academic study. At the University of Jyväskylä, students don’t face this journey alone. Instead, JYU provides a well‑structured combination of research training, academic writing support, and practical guidance designed to help you grow as a researcher and writer. The following overview explains how JYU prepares you for this process.

How do I start preparing my thesis?

Firstly, take a breath – we've got it covered! The University of Jyväskylä primarily prepares students through its Research Module, which consists of 5-6 courses totalling approximately 45 credits. These Research Module courses will guide you in selecting a topic, formulating research questions, and choosing an appropriate research design. Especially, one of the courses improves your understanding of the importance of theories and how they are applied in research. 

The entire research module is very helpful for master’s students in refining the research scope, distinguishing between different research methodologies, identifying the most suitable method for the chosen topic, and selecting an appropriate analytical approach.

Practice your skills and learn from others in the Thesis Seminar

The Thesis Seminar course is beneficial, as it guides you from choosing the most suitable supervisor for their research field to writing the thesis. This course plays a central role by enabling you to experience the thesis process in advance and write a mini thesis. 

Completion of each assignment contributes to the actual thesis work and includes both peer feedback and lecturer feedback, which are very useful in improving your main thesis. By reviewing peers’ work, you can also improve our critical reading and analytical skills while identifying best practices that we can follow in our own research.

Never skip your Academic English courses

Although the Research Module provides strong theoretical, methodological, and analytical support, additional guidance in academic writing is also necessary, which is effectively offered through JYU’s Academic English courses and online resources. 

There are courses such as Introductory Scientific Writing and Master’s Thesis Support, which help you from information searching to thesis writing. Through these courses, you can learn how to search for academic articles using different databases through the university online library and how to assess the reliability of selected articles before using them in our work. 

These courses are very engaging and include in-class discussions on topics such as note-taking techniques, critical reading and writing, paraphrasing, academic ethics, text genres and structure, referencing, and the use of AI tools. 

In-class activities and assignments also include self-reflections and peer feedback. At the end of these courses, you can have one-to-one or group discussions with the lecturer to identify our strengths and areas for improvement in academic writing. These feedback sessions and self-reflection activities are crucial in identifying your initial writing level, how it has improved throughout the course, and which aspects of writing require further improvement and how to achieve it.

In addition to the courses mentioned above, the JYU website on Academic Writing provides comprehensive guidance at different stages of our studies. It includes content on the characteristics of academic and scientific texts, discipline and faculty specific writing practices, academic writing courses, and links to additional academic support web pages. 

The Academic Writing website also includes library tutorials on information seeking, instructions on managing research data, tips on using AI tools in information seeking, academic reading techniques, citations guidelines, and tutorials on using reference management software. 

There is also a separate website called Thesis Guide, which provides guidance from starting a thesis to online publication of the final thesis. It outlines how to begin the thesis process, explains registration and application steps, and includes instructions and assessment criteria for writing the thesis. The guide also covers how to return the thesis for review, how the electronic submission system works, and what students should know about publishing their thesis, copyrights, and the thesis publishing agreement. In addition, it offers information on the maturity exam, accessibility requirements for theses, research data management, and information‑seeking support.

Please also note that practices may vary from one field to another: All the instructions and support provided on the websites are customised based on disciplines such as Information Technology, Business and Economics, and Sport Sciences.

Attend peer-to-peer support events

When working on your thesis independently, you may sometimes slow down or feel less motivated. ‘Weekend Thesis Undertaking’ is a student event that uses peer pressure effectively to speed up the thesis-writing process while enhancing our motivation: 

Students get together in a reserved space, share their research topics, current stage of the thesis, challenges they may need help with, and ways they can support others. Then they work independently for 2-3 hours, followed by peer support sessions, and take breaks for coffee or lunch before continuing again. This is a very effective method to work on the thesis without feeling overwhelmed or stressed, especially when the submission deadline is approaching. 

In short, you don’t have to figure everything out by yourself. With JYU’s courses, resources, and supportive community, you gain the skills and confidence to move step by step toward your graduation.
