Sharing Insights on mentoring for PhD and Early Career Researchers Mentoring

Following the breakfast, participants broke into smaller discussion groups to map out suggestions for future mentoring initiatives to support the well-being and career development of researchers at early stage. Here are some highlighted insights from the session:

1. Career -oriented mentoing

There is a clear demand for more career-oriented mentoring that helps researchers navigate diverse career opportunities both within JYU and beyond academia.

2. Support for Targeted Groups

Future mentoring activities could be tailored more closely to the distinct needs of doctoral researchers at different career stages, as well as those from international backgrounds.

3. Mentoring structure

Participants highly valued face-to-face interactions, the interdisciplinary nature of the groups, and the space to discuss the multifaceted realities of researcher life. Funding support and academic travel grants are topics of interest. Apart from the existing group mentoring models, one-on-one mentoring was suggested.

The event offered valuable, firsthand insights that will help shape the next steps for mentoring frameworks at JYU, ensuring they remain responsive to the evolving needs of our research community.

Wonderful discussion started with good breakfast :-)

JYU International Staff Week

Following the constructive morning session, JYU.Well and the METEOR JYU team hosted a session introducing JYU's mentoring programme to the international colleagues from JYU partner universities. Mentors and mentees from both initiatives shared insights into how mentoring is structured at JYU, while our international guests exchanged perspectives and practices from their own institutional contexts.
