METEOR Project presents at the HIEST Research Seminar
The presentation was led by Dr. Josephine Lau, together with Dr. Sotiria Varis and Professor Terhi Nokkala. The presentation was attended both online and in-person by higher education researchers from FIER. In addition, we had METEOR mentors and mentee sharing their firsthand experiences within the program.
Skills and Support needed by PhDs and Early Career researchers
Apart from introducing the METEOR Project to our colleagues on higher education research, the core of the seminar focused on the transversal skills METEOR aims to cultivate—such as intercultural communication, project management, and interdisciplinary collaboration—and how the Peer Mentoring Group (PMG) structure specifically facilitates this growth. The METEOR Academy at JYU was used as a case study for transformative learning in the community of practices.
Highlight of the discussion
The discussion was very inspiring and the seminar group touched upon different viewpoints including but not limited to:
- Rethinking the current state and purpose of doctoral education more holistically
- The institutional role in facilitating the development of transversal skills.
- The ways to ensure high-quality resources and networks developed by METEOR continue to benefit the community in the long term.
- The theoretical lens used to conceptualize and study the learning in the peer mentoring group
This event served as an inspiring conclusion to the academic year for the HIEST research seminar series. The METEOR team will continue building solid evidence from the project experiences totransform doctoral education for impact.
