Doctoral Education

The University of Jyväskylä trains researchers and experts with a broad range of skills to meet society's needs.

Around 1,500 doctoral researchers are currently studying at the University of Jyväskylä. During their training, doctoral researchers gain in-depth knowledge of their field of research to enable them to apply scientific research methods independently and critically and to generate new scientific knowledge. In addition to independent research, the degree includes studies in discipline-specific and transferable skills. The doctorate can be completed in 3-4 years of full-time study. The university graduates around 150 new doctoral students each year.

A dissertation is a research-based, solid scientific presentation from the doctoral student’s field of study. It represents the student’s ability to independently and critically apply the methods of scientific research and create new scientific information.

For dissertation supervisors

As set out in the Degree Regulations, each doctoral student is assigned at least two supervisors, one of whom acts as the supervisor-in-charge. The doctoral student and the supervisor-in-charge confirm a supervision document. The purpose of dissertation supervision is to ensure that the doctoral student achieves the academic qualification required for a doctorate, and that their dissertation meets the dissertation requirements.
