Professor Alexander Etkind (Central European University, Vienna) will deliver a guest lecture entitled “Russia against Modernity: Oil, Climate, and War” on Thursday June 12, at 2.15 pm in lecture hall H320 in the Historica-building. The lecture will focus on how Russia’s recent actions can be explained by examining its role as a major oil exporter.
Alexander Etkind is visiting the University of Jyväskylä under the auspices of the JYU Visiting Fellow Programme. He works in the International Relations Department of the CEU in Vienna, where he set up the Open Society Hub for the Politics of the Anthropocene research centre in 2024. He has previously taught at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (2013-2022), Cambridge University (2004-2013) and the European University of St. Petersburg (1999-2004). He is a highly productive scholar, whose main publications include Internal Colonization: Russia’s Imperial Experience (Polity Press 2011); Warped Mourning: Stories of the Undead in the Land of the Unburied (Stanford University Press 2013) and Nature’s Evil: A Cultural History of Natural Resources (Polity Press 2021). His most recent book, Russia against Modernity (Polity Press), appeared in 2023.
