MSc. Hanna Elomaa presents her doctoral research "Immune cell composition and immunosuppressive factors in colorectal cancer"
ABSTRACT: The evaluation of colorectal cancer prognosis and treatment primarily relies on assessing the tumor cell morphology and extent. However, immune cell infiltration within the tumor microenvironment has shown to be a potential additional parameter for refining the prognostic assessment, although its role in cancer progression and impact on cancer prognosis remain incompletely understood. In this study, the prognostic role of immune cell infiltration and the expression patterns of immunosuppressive molecules were characterized using immunohistochemistry and machine learning-based image analysis. The project aimed to characterize the role of immune cells in tumor progression and to clarify tumor-host interactions.
