Biological and Environmental Science Seminar 4.9.2025

Departmental Seminar by "in-house speaker", Associate Prof. Suvi Ruuskanen from University of Jyväskylä on the topic "Gut microbiome, host phenotypic variation and responses to environmental challenges".

Open to everyone interested. The event offers a great opportunity to learn, share ideas, and connect with colleagues across disciplines. Welcome!

Coffee will be served before the seminar - come early to grab a cup and mingle!
The Ylistö Campus
The seminar will be held at Ylistönrinne, where the Department of Biological and Environmental Science is located.

Microbes are everywhere, all organisms carry them, and the gut microbiome varies vastly across individuals and species. A current key challenge is to understand how microbiome variation contributes to host phenotypic variation within and across generations, and especially how the microbiome may help the host to respond to environmental variation. The talk summarizes our recent results on the effects of environmental variation on gut the microbiome, and the links between microbiome variation, development, physiology and fitness in birds.
