Prof. Möttönen studies cognition with a focus on neural mechanisms that underpin human communication through speech. To accomplish this, she uses a range of brain research tools including stimulation and electrophysiological methods. She works as a professor at the University of Helsinki and has conducted research at the University of Oxford and the University of Nottingham.
Her current MRC-funded project examines how interacting motor and sensory brain regions support speech perception and production in fluent speakers and in people who stutter. The project also investigates whether brain stimulation can enhance effects of training on speech skills.
