Welcome to discuss and share ideas of creative and arts-based methods in university teaching and research at the Creative Café meeting!
The staff of the Department of Teacher Education meets once or twice each academic year to discuss creativity in our work from different perspectives. These meetings are called Creative Café – Luovat kahvit. This May, we extend our invitation to the whole JYU university staff and students on the occasion of the exchange visit of Tim Herrick.
Tim is a Senior University Teacher in the School of Education at the University of Sheffield. He has taught in higher education for more than 20 years, working with learners at all levels, from adult students taking their first steps back into higher education, through undergraduate and Masters levels, and to doctoral education and professional development for colleagues. His areas of specialism include higher education pedagogy, student-staff collaboration, student experiences of learning spaces, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. In 2025, he was awarded the Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, and a National Teaching Fellowship.
In the Creative Café meeting, he would particularly welcome conversations about some of the following topics:
- What are you particularly proud of in your pedagogical approaches, individually and collectively, that you think should be shared more widely?
- How do you see learning and teaching in Jyväskylä changing over the coming years, e.g. in response to developments in the student body, social expectations, learning technologies etc.?
- What is exciting and inspiring you in teaching at the moment? Where are the areas for energy and growth?
- In what ways do doctoral students form part of the learning community at Jyväskylä?
- What (if anything) are you interested in learning about in relation to UK higher education?
The Creative Café meeting takes place on 25 May from 12:15 to 13:45 in Ruusupuisto building (RUU C101 Lucina).
The Creative Café meeting is facilitated by Anne Martin (anne.m.martin@jyu.fi). Tim is hosted by Tamás Péter Szabó (tamas.p.szabo@jyu.fi). Please let them know if you would like to give a brief presentation or demo during the meeting.
Welcome!
