Joseph Ben Prestel is Assistant Professor of History at Freie Universität Berlin. His first book Emotional Cities: Debates on Urban Change in Berlin and Cairo, 1860-1910 was published in 2017 with Oxford University Press. It won the Urban History Association’s Best Book in Non North American History Award, 2017-18, and was translated and published in Arabic. Joseph’s current research analyzes the rise and decline of a solidarity movement with Palestinians in West Germany, between the late 1950s and early 1980s. An article that stems from this project was published in The American Historical Review (September 2022 issue) under the title “A Diaspora Moment: Writing Global History Through Palestinian-West German Ties.” Between August and September 2024 he is a JYU Visiting Fellow in the Department of History and Ethnology.
