The creativity of artificial intelligence in translation

The lecture deals with the comparison of human and machine translation using examples of different styles. Morphosyntactic and lexical analysis of the translation evaluates the quality of machine translation from German into Slovak in user manuals, advertising texts, websites, journalistic texts, official documents and literary texts. Based on translation universals, the author evaluates the possibilities of translation in the form of the law of increasing standardization and interference with the source text (G. Toury). The aim is to determine the degree of creativity of the automatic translator when translating texts of a technical, advertising, journalistic and artistic style.

Pavlová is the author of the monograph The Quality of Machine Translation in Literary Works;  (Kvalita strojového prekladu v umeleckej literatúre; Kirsch-Verlag, 2022) and contributed to the monograph Post-editing Machine Translation in the German-Slovak Language Pair (Posteditácia strojového prekladu v jazykovej kombinácii nemčina - slovenčina; Kirsch-Verlag, 2023), Wie irrt die Maschine? Probleme der maschinellen Übersetzung (Verlag Kovač, 2019) and To err is human, but also machines err (Mýliť sa je ľudské, ale aj strojové; Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, 2017).
